The Indian automobile industry is undergoing a major transformation with the rise in popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) and the introduction of new body styles such as coupe SUVs. The two most anticipated upcoming models that combine both these trends are the Tata Curve and the Mahindra XUV E.9. These India-centric coupe SUVs aim to bring a unique blend of style, comfort, performance and sustainability to the discerning Indian buyer.

Recently unveiled at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024, the Tata Curve Preview model provides the first full look at Tata’s first coupe SUV offering. Instantly recognizable by its sloping rear windshield and shapely silhouette, the Curve aims for a sporty and bold design direction.

On the outside, the Curve features Tata’s latest design language with split LED headlamps, flush door handles and 18-inch alloy wheels. With a length of 4,308 mm and a wheelbase of 2,560 mm, it promises to be a large coupe SUV for India. From the teasers revealed, the interior of the Tata Curve is heavily inspired by the recently updated Tata Nexon with similar dashboard layout, touchscreen and controls.

Premium features like panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, connected car technology are also expected. The Curve is confirmed to be launched with a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The power output is rated at 113hp and 260Nm torque which promises an engaging drive experience. Additionally, an all-electric version showcasing Tata’s EV capabilities has also been confirmed. Curve EV can be given the same Ziptron technology as Nexon EV.

The Curve is said to give priority to safety with features like rear disc brakes, parking sensors, blind spot monitoring and more. Tata said the official launch of the Curve should take place in late 2024. With its extravagant looks, feature loaded cabin and green powertrain options, the Curve promises to capture the imagination of style-conscious Indian buyers.

Joining the coupe SUV bandwagon is Mahindra’s flagship XUV e.9 model, which belongs to a larger, higher segment. Recently the XUV e.9 was spotted testing in Bangalore, the test vehicle had camouflage indicating an advanced stage of development. As the name suggests, the e.9 will be an electric powered coupe version of Mahindra’s new XUV e.8 7-seater EV SUV. Mahindra XUV e.9 design patent was leaked in January and it was very similar to the concept version

Even under the covers, the front fascia of the XUV e.9 flaunts an impressive, upright stance that is reminiscent of the standard XUV700. The flared wheel arches, side running boards and dual tone alloy wheels hint at muscularity. However, it is the sloping rear windshield line that conveys the coupe’s intention to resemble the Tata Curve. The interiors are expected to be largely shared with the XUV e.8 with dual digital displays and premium materials.
